Say the word. They'll know it's you.

Watchword is a free kit that walks you through setting up fraud protection at your own bank and brokerage — watchers who can't withdraw a dollar, alerts that make you your own second set of eyes, and a shared word that tells a real emergency from a cloned voice. You set it up. You keep control. You're done in about 90 minutes, and it costs nothing to read.

The problem with the standard advice

“Just name someone you trust.”

Every guide for protecting your money in retirement says the same thing: appoint a power of attorney. That advice assumes an obvious, safe person already exists — and hands them the power to withdraw money, sell property, and add themselves to your accounts.

Half of women 65 and over are unpartnered. If you don't have that obvious person, you've been given two bad options: hand a key to someone you're not sure of, or have no protection at all.

Watchword is the third door. Distributed, non-transacting oversight — several people who can be told when something looks wrong, and not one of them can touch a dime, plus a private word that proves it's really you when a voice on the phone can no longer prove it on its own. The tools already exist at your own institutions, free. The kit is the step-by-step system for turning them all on.

Why this costs nothing

The setup is free. On purpose, not as a trial.

A paywalled checklist is the one thing a free AARP PDF could copy overnight.

I thought about charging for this the way most kits do — pay first, read after. Then I noticed the flaw: everything in here is built from public rules and settings that already exist for free at your own bank and brokerage. AARP or FINRA could publish a version of this checklist tomorrow, for nothing, and a paywall would have nothing left to defend. So there's nothing to undercut. The whole kit — all six components — is free to read, right now, no email required.

What I sell instead is what a free web page structurally can't be: a printed workbook you fill in by hand rather than read on a screen, and a dated annual re-audit for the year you'd rather not track the scam landscape yourself. Neither is required. Both fund keeping the scripts current, which free content can't do on its own.

What's in the kit — all of it, free

Six components. About 90 minutes. Done.

1 · Trusted-Contact Walkthrough

Phone and message scripts to put a watcher-who-cannot-steal on file at every investment account. By FINRA's own definition, a trusted contact can't trade, can't decide, and never becomes a power of attorney.

~20 minutes

2 · Bank Alert Grid

Banks aren't covered by the brokerage rule — so they get their own chapter. Turn on the three alerts that flag a large transaction, a new payee, and a new device, before the money moves.

~20 minutes

3 · Scam Reference Deck

Seven cards for the scams actually aimed at women your age — how each opens, the tell, and the counter-move that beats it.

~15 minutes

4 · Circle-of-Three & the watchword

Three non-transacting watchers beat one all-powerful agent. Who to pick, exactly what to say when you ask — and the private watchword you and each of them agree on together, so a cloned voice or a stranger's story can never pass for one of you.

~15 minutes

5 · The 48-Hour Rule

One rule that removes the urgency every scam depends on: no money moves on anyone else's clock. Printable lock-screen card included.

~5 minutes

6 · The “Done” Ledger

One page that shows the whole system is on — every account, every protection, every date — and when to check it again.

~15 minutes

An honest comparison

Monitoring services are fine. This isn't one.

Carefull and EverSafe watch your linked accounts in real time, for a monthly fee. They're real products. They also require trusting a company with your whole transaction feed. Watchword is for the woman who won't do that — it's a free setup you run yourself, at your own institutions, once, and it never asks for your fee or your feed.

Practice, not paranoia

Take three minutes and beat a scam call.

The Drill is a free rehearsal: a simulated scam call, one decision at a time. No sign-up, nothing recorded. Most people are surprised where it gets them.

Six emails over twelve days.

The whole kit is on this site to read right now, free, with no email required — that isn't going to change. But if you'd rather do one step at a time than read it all at once, I'll send it to you in six short emails.

The Printed Workbook

Spiral-bound, fill-in-by-hand, shipped to you or to someone you're keeping an eye on. The gift for the niece to send the aunt who keeps an eye on everyone but has no one keeping an eye on her.

Annual Re-Audit

$29 /year, optional

Scams change; accounts drift. A refreshed deck built on the new year's FBI data, plus the re-check ritual. Never required — the free Done Ledger walks you through the same re-check yourself.

Fair questions

Why is this free?

Because everything in it is built from public rules and settings that already exist for free at your own bank and brokerage — a paywall would have nothing to protect, since a free AARP checklist could copy it overnight. I'd rather give away the protection and earn from the things a free page can't be: a printed workbook and a maintained annual refresh. See the “why this costs nothing” section above for the honest version.

Is the printed workbook required?

No. Every component works read on this site or printed from your own printer for free. The workbook is for people who'd rather fill it in by hand than read on a screen, or who want to give it as a gift. It's paper, not a key that unlocks anything.

Is this a monitoring service?

No. We never link to, see, or touch your accounts. You set up protections at your own institutions and keep every bit of control. If you want real-time monitoring, that's Carefull or EverSafe — different product, different trade.

Does this guarantee I won't be scammed?

No, and be suspicious of anything that says otherwise. The kit reduces risk; it doesn't eliminate it. It closes the specific doors a stranger on the phone is counting on being open.

Is this financial or legal advice?

No. Watchword is educational — it teaches a defensive process. It never recommends investments, products, or providers. For advice about your situation, see a licensed professional.

I'm not 60. Is it still for me?

The kit was built for unmarried women heading into retirement, because that's who the standard advice fails worst. The defenses work for anyone with accounts and a phone.
